Start up You are a business owner.  You have a software development company and you want to take your product to the public.  You don’t have a lot of money and feel as though everything is on your shoulder.  Competition is stiff and there are others out there trying to do the exact same thing you are.  How can you succeed when the cards seem to be stacked so high against you?

One of the most important things you can do to prepare for the launching of your business is to do research.  Knowledge is power and in a field that is always changing, you will be continuously reading, checking out what is trending and what people are interested at the moment.  It will change today from yesterday and tomorrow you better be sure that it will be different from today.  Stay relevant and innovative and people will remain interested in what you have to offer.

Another important aspect of creating a successful software business is to take advantage of all situations, increasing your opportunities for exposure and use.  Even if you have open source software, and you feel as though no real profit can be made from it, it is not true.  You can always update existing software to make it better than it was before, creating more of a demand.  Some companies will want to buy your open source software for this very reason; the kernel and the GNOME are prime examples of open source projects being used to repackage a product for better delivery and accessibility.

Open source markets are increasing by the year, so if this is the business you are in, finding a way to monetize an open source market is feasible and necessary to remain successful.  Since the market is being engulfed with open source, your competitors are also looking for ways to make money off of a free product.
